Riordan Mansion State Historic Park

Whenever the rain falls in Flagstaff, make sure to do yourself a favor and visit the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park. The Riordan Mansion was built in 1904 for two Riordan families to live in the area. This is no typical home and instead an expansive mansion that features 40 different rooms. It has been turned into a State Historic Park and is open for guided tours. Guests can visit the property and be wowed by the incredible architecture of the home. The home itself features over 13,000 square feet that can be explored. Tours are only $10, making this an extremely budget-friendly activity. Architect buffs and anyone who appreciates some Flagstaff history will find this activity to be one of their favorites!
 

Museum of Northern Arizona

Flagstaff is located in a unique landscape here in Northern Arizona, as it features a variety of biological and geological resources. The Museum of Northern Arizona was created to be better understand this vast region along with showing locals and visitors a detailed look at Flagstaff’s landscape. Visitors will find that the Museum of Northern Arizona has nine permanent and rotating exhibit galleries that focus on natural sciences, tribal lifeways, fine arts, and Native American cultures. The onsite bookstore and museum shop is award winning and is a great place to find a gift for someone back home. A tour of the museum usually takes approximately 1-2 hours with tours available between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
 

Flagstaff Visitor Center

Come see all things Flagstaff by visiting the Flagstaff Visitor Center here in town. The visitor center is actually located inside the Historic Train Station. You will be able to make the most of your trip to the area by starting off with a stop here. Visitors can find maps of the area, watch the trains take off from the station, and explore the vast gift shop. You will find practically everything at the gift shop, allowing you to bring all things Flagstaff related back home to your loved ones.
 

Hit the Local Breweries

Flagstaff is home to outdoor enthusiasts who share a love for exploring the rich landscape of the area and then finish their day off at one of the local breweries. Mother Road Brewing has been around for years and is the perfect stop for IPA lovers. Hang out in their intimate tasting room where you can see all of the brewing equipment used to make their delicious beers. Dark Sky Brewery is one of the more recent additions in town but has become an instant favorite since they first opened a few years ago. Stop by their original brewery for a tasting flight of some of their unique beers. This location also shares an indoor space with Pizzicletta, a tasty and fan favorite pizza joint that uses a wood fire oven for their delicious pizza pies. You cannot go wrong with a stop by any brewery here in town as you hide out from the rain.

For a unique beverage as you hide from the rain stop by Drinking Horn Meadery and Mead Hall. This local purveyor of mead brings you the delicious adult beverage that you may have tried at a Renaissance faire, but this one is made locally. Enjoy this honey wine that uses natural fruit flavors for a drink like nothing you have had before.
 

Catch a Movie

If all else fails, you can always head to the nearest movie theatre in Flagstaff and wait out the rain by catching a movie. Day 1 – Friday

Many individuals spend their Fridays on three-day trips arriving at their destination. Flagstaff features a high elevation providing cool temperatures throughout the year. If you are visiting during the warmer times of the year your first day can be best spent exploring the wonderful outdoor areas of Flagstaff. This includes a visit to Sunset Crater where visitors can find an extinct volcano with a modest hike to trek. For a little bit of a further drive, guests can check out Walnut Canyon National Monument which includes cliff dwellings and beautiful geological formations.

As your day unwinds you will find yourself ready for a delicious meal in Flagstaff. Luckily the city is home to many different locally owned restaurants, especially in the downtown neighborhood. Try out a delicious meal at Diablo Burger. This tasty burger joint features made-to-order burgers served on toasted English muffins; the fries come perfectly seasoned to complete the whole experience. Day 2 – Saturday

Now that you have gotten a taste of the incredible outdoor scenery around Flagstaff you may be wanting to see even more. Luckily seeing the scenic areas around Flagstaff is easy as most areas are within a short driving distance. This includes the ever-popular Coconino National Forest just south of Flagstaff. This incredible nature reserve is best known for its red rocks that tower over everything else around them. Exploring the forest is on many bucket lists so getting to the area early is especially recommended. If you are visiting Flagstaff during the winter season you will want to stick around town to find Arizona Snowbowl ready to take you up the mountain. Arizona Snowbowl is one of Arizona’s top ski resorts that features a variety of winter sports slopes down the mountains. Visitors simply purchase a lift ticket that will take them up the mountain so they can ski or snowboard back down. Their onsite rental shop has everything you need from skis, snowboards, bindings, boots, and more. There is even a shop you can browse to purchase jackets and more. Arizona Snowbowl is found immediately outside of town making it just minutes away from most of our vacation rentals.

Unwind after your busy day or exploring the Coconino National Forest or grinding down the local mountains with a stop at Dark Sky Brewing Company. This cherished local brewery is one of the more recent additions to town opening up a couple of years ago. Their main tasting room features rotating taps of your favorite beers including IPAs, sours, lagers, and many more. Pizzicleta, one of Flagstaff’s most popular pizzerias, shares the interior space offering up their made-to-order pizzas that are a must for anyone looking for a quick bite. Dark Sky Brewing also features a beer garden with its own in-house kitchen and huge patio seating area. While no children are allowed in the beer garden your loveable canine companion that is on a leash is welcome to join you for your adult beverage.

 

Day 3 – Sunday

Your final day in Flagstaff should be a day of relaxation and taking in the sights before you take off. Flagstaff features many charming attractions to explore such as the Museum of Northern Arizona which focuses on regional exhibits. Guests can also take time to explore the lovely exterior of Northern Arizona University to feel at one with the locals. Downtown Flagstaff offers plenty of local businesses to shop from including outdoor outfitters, boutiques, and art galleries. Flagstaff Freaky Fouttours

Halloween is a holiday designed to celebrate all things spooky and you will find no shortage of spooky activities here in Flagstaff. Like other Northern Arizona towns, Flagstaff has a rich history with hauntings, especially in the downtown neighborhood. You and your family can go out and explore the supposed haunted buildings of downtown Flagstaff with the folks over at Flagstaff Freaky Foottours. They offer walking tours that will take you around downtown Flagstaff at night as the rich history is explained out loud. The tour is approximately one mile in length with around seven or eight stops along the way. This 75-minute tour will discuss the railroad expansion of the 1880s and the resulting hauntings at local buildings such as the historic Monte Vista hotel and even the library. Their haunted history tour is rated PG-13 making it the perfect spooky activity for families with older children. Reservations are highly encouraged during October and can be placed by calling 928-224-0518. Tickets start at $18 per person for this must-see activity!

 

Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Orpheum

For many adults, Halloween is never complete without getting to see a live stage production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This iconic movie has hit the theatre stages over the last decade and continues to be a classic tradition in the fall. Flagstaff will have the perfect opportunity for you to join in on the fun and shenanigans this fall season on Saturday 10/22. This Saturday will host two different stage productions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. You can attend the early performance taking place at 7:30 PM or stop in for the late performance starting at 10:30 PM. Each performance is known to bring the attendees into the fold by having them join on stage or being called out by the cast members. Tickets include regular viewing seats or the “More, More, More” VIP tickets that have you sitting upfront and practically being a part of the show. Downtown Flagstaff Trick or Treat Trail

Halloween will always be a family holiday as groups of adults and children get together in their best costumes to show off to the world. On Halloween Day families can make their way to Downtown Flagstaff for the annual Downtown Flagstaff Trick or Treat Trail. Things finally feel back to normal after the past few Halloween holidays have dealt with social distancing. The event will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and kicks off from Heritage Square where you can grab a trick-or-treat trail map; the map is also available online. Fall Events

The fall season is a great time for special events in Flagstaff as the weather has dropped off for the year. With great weather comes an incredible lineup of special events taking place in Flagstaff. The fun all starts with the annual spectacular, 16th Annual Pickin’ in the Pines. This local festival is a live music lover’s dream with an extended lineup of bluegrass and acoustic tunes. The 2022 lineup is looking better than ever with artists including Dan Tyminski, The Jerry Douglas Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and many more. Pickin’ in the Pines has been an award-winning festival for years and continues to be an event many people look forward to. This year’s festivities will take place at the Pepsi Amphitheater from September 16th through the 18th. No fall season would be complete without an Oktoberfest celebration taking place. This year, the 13th Annual Flagstaff Oktoberfest will be hitting the area for a full day of German brews, exciting contests, delicious food, and live music. The event will take place on October 1st from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Wheeler Park here in Flagstaff. These events make the fall season an exciting time to visit!
 

See the Fall Foliage

If you come from an area where your trees do not change with the season you will be in for quite the treat in Flagstaff. The fall season is a great time to go leaf peeping and see the changing colors of the leaves. The local trees will turn from a deep green to colors including gold, red, and orange each more beautiful than the last. Your best bet to see as many different colors as possible is early in the season around September. There are quite a few places to go leaf peeping in Flagstaff too.
